NAWBO Member Organizes "Bring Your Pet to School" for Free Vaccines an
CAMDEN – Pet owners living in the 10 square-mile city limits of Camden are urged to bring their dog or cat for free distemper/Parvo vaccines and free bag of food. The immunizations and pet food distribution will highlight one of the projects featured at the annual health fair on Thursday, May 21, 2009, on the grounds of the Dr. E. Charles Brimm Medical Arts High School, 1626 Copewood St., Camden City, NJ  from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. . Dr. E. Charles Brimm Medical Arts High School prepares students for a career in medicine.
For five years, NJ Aid for Animals (NJAFA) President, Kathy McGuire, has been traveling to and from Camden getting permission from dog and cat owners to take their pets for spaying and neutering procedures to stop the burgeoning overpopulation of unwanted pets.  Along with this, they also “aid” animals in need and most often it is to help with dogs with Parvo. Emergency veterinarians, besides heat stroke, see more dogs in summer for PARVO than any other cause
“Parvo is a very deadly contagious disease that most often strikes puppies ,” and a simple vaccine given early can save its life if given early.   McGuire explains. “But even if your dog is out of the puppy stage, this is a very important vaccine that should be administered to prevent disease. Kittens and cats get the Feline Distemper Combo vaccine. The cost of a veterinary office visit and one shot could total about $65 – but it’s all being provided free of charge plus a bag of food on May 21. This is one health fair Camden City pet owners don’t want to miss and a great opportunity...
McGuire, invited to be part of the Brimm Medical Arts High School Freshman Project, by teacher Karen Borrelli, is lending her nonprofit name and experience with the animals in Camden City to enthusiastic students who have made this annual health fair a signature event.
In keeping with their goal of helping the community and its animals, McGuire and Ms.Borrelli’s class decided to partner on a food bank and vaccine clinic.
The students came up with a name for their project, “Brimm’s Chow Hound House” complete with a logo,  a mission statement l to use any and all donations to supply pet food to Camden City residents struggling to feed not only their families but their pets.

Calling in NJAFA’s  partners, Atlantic Co. SPCA is generously donating their mobile medical van and Camden Co Animal Shelter’s qualified veterinarians will staff it, while the three groups will be providing the vaccines, supplies and volunteers.   Animal Orphanage in Voorhees is also sharing and contributing a considerable amount of food to help the animals in Camden.
“These caring students have turned this year’s annual  health fair into a full-blown project, designed to educate and inform about pet wellness and come to the aid of pet owners in need,” McGuire reports. “This is a wonderful opportunity for residents of Camden City to get their dogs and cats shots.”
"Partnering is a way to pool energy, resources, funds and experience", states McGuire.  “We can more effectively help animals as a team“ and more importantly, reaching and working with the children in any infrastructure to bring awareness about humane education is vital.”

This impressive community partnership, steps up efforts by local animal rescue groups to promote humane care and treatment of dogs and cats.
“Forming alliances with other non-profit organizations will allow us to provide more needed services to residents with pets, as well as raise the standard of care for animals in Camden City," says Niki Dawson, executive director of the Camden County Animal Shelter.
While supplies last, each pet owner will receive Canine Distemper/ Parvo vaccine for dogs and Feline Distemper Combo for cats on a first-come, first served basis.
Food and shots will be distributed on the school’s loading dock located on the side of the building near the cafeteria. In case of rain, distribution will take place by the side entrance of the school.

NAWBO Member Kathy McGuire, President of NJ Aid for Animals, to host First Annual Angel Awards, May 15, honoring Carol Erickson, CBS 3  Meteorologist

Gloucester County -- Ms. Delor Cornell, President of the Westville, NJ-based Cornell & Company, is graciously hosting NJ Aid for Animals’ First Annual Angel Award fundraiser, Friday,  May 15, 2009 at 6 p.m.

Ms. Cornell will open her lovely log cabin residence in Wenonah to the animal rescue community and local dignitaries to celebrate NJAFA’s First Annual Angel Awards. Guest of honor will be Carol Erickson, meteorologist CBS 3 Philadelphia and animal lover. Donations are $100 per person and 100%  tax-deductible. Attire is business casual.

“Ms. Cornell and I  have invited the ‘movers and shakers’ in the animal community as well as  everyday citizens who are serious animal lovers and want to show their support to raise much needed monies for our medical fund,” says Kathy McGuire, founder and president of NJAFA.

“Our principal mission focuses on animals living in the city of Camden. We travel to Camden with the express purpose of helping to reduce the unchecked breeding of cats and dogs by getting permission from pet owners to take their animals for a spaying or neutering procedure. These pet owners, who are usually without the funds and/or transportation to get the procedure done themselves, are grateful that we offer to do this, free of charge. Unplanned litters of puppies and kittens almost always end up strays and vulnerable to disease, hunger and abuse.”

And, although donations are always needed to offset the spay neuter program, funds raised from the Angel Awards dinner benefit are earmarked for medical procedures that frequently are needed by Camden city pets.

“Although our mission has always been to get Camden animals altered and promptly return them to their owners, we receive calls almost weekly about dogs or cats needing surgical procedures which their owners cannot afford,” McGuire points out, whose direct, hands-on involvement includes getting the majority of the cases done herself.

“NJAFA is almost four years old, and we are  a hands-on grass roots organization with no paid staff. We are grateful our reputation has been recognized by local government and we have cultivated partnerships with law enforcement, conceived innovative ideas to enrich the lives of animals, and are developing programs to educate the public about animal abuse. I am happy to say that over the last few years, NJAFA’s work has become well-known throughout the state and we have been successful in connecting the dots in the steps necessary for successful prosecution of animal abusers.”

Angel Award honoree Erickson is a devoted and dedicated friend to all groups and rescues.  Reports McGuire, “She gives up her weekends and time off to host events like fashion shows, celebrity events and promotes humane education on CBS 3 and we could not find a better friend in the media that loves animals.”

Event highlights include gourmet cuisine; open wine/beer bar; music by Pat Karwin;  guest appearances by celebrity impersonator Holly Faris and Ms. Cont’l America, Gail Kasper; Angel Card readings by Mary Walsh and opportunities for consultations with animal communicator Emerald DuCoeuer

An industry leader in steel erection, Cornell & Company’s new construction and rehab projects include such Philadelphia skyline notables as the Comcast Tower, the Blue Cross Building, Commerce Square, 11 Penn Center, Liberty One, The Mellon Bank Building. The company’s involvement also includes such major infrastructure projects as  the Walt Whitman Bridge, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the New Jersey Turnpike, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Philadelphia's Schuylkill Expressway, London's Canary Wharf, and the Blue Route linking the Pennsylvania Turnpike with I-95 south of Philadelphia, and numerous highway and rail bridges in the Mid-Atlantic States.

Delor Cornell, President comments: “Cornell is proud and honored to be the erector of the World Trade Center Memorial.  It is not the largest job we have ever done but it is clearly the most important job we have ever done”.

RSVP deadline for the Angel Awards is April 20, 2009. Due to limited space, no tickets will be sold at the door. Please send check or money order for $100 to NJAFA, P.O. Box 4, Cedar Brook, NJ 08018 or use PayPal online at www.njafa.org  Call with questions to 856-498-3978 or email info@njafa.org
